Empathy
In 2018 I had to have my own hand surgery (through no fault of my own)! Fortunately everything went well…
The (wonderful!) surgeon offered for me to have it done under local anaesthetic and it changed my perspective forever, hence my love of Wide Awake Hand Surgery.
I’ve also recently had a shoulder fracture from a skiing injury, that needed to be fixed. Having an injury or longer term problem with your hands, or any part of your body, is difficult, both physically and psychologically and I understand that more than most!
Expertise
Fellowships: I am a fellowship-trained hand, wrist and elbow surgeon and completed my Higher Surgical Training in Devon and Cornwall, then at the world-renowned Pulvertaft Hand Centre in Derby.
Research and Lecturing: I have 15 peer-reviewed articles, lecture internationally on Hand & Wrist and in particular the use of Local Anaesthetics (LA) and have contributed to the definitive book on the subject (Wide Awake Hand Surgery).
Guidelines: When the British Society for Surgery of the Hand (BSSH) needed help for operating during Covid-19, I was part of an amazing group to establish safe practice guidelines to allow patients to still get treated.
Prizes and Education: I have won prizes for my educational videos and am an active educator and mentor to both surgeons and orthopaedic sales teams in the UK.
Innovation and Entrepreneur: People who know me well comment that I am always pushing to make life better for my patients but also my friends and colleagues. Innovations that make my patients’ lives better, easier or their rehab faster make me happier such as using ultrasound to guide my carpal tunnel releases in an ultra-minimally invasive technique. I am Chief Medical Officer for an Orthopaedic implant company – Aurora Medical (currently working with the University of Southampton on some very cool new implants!) and an Orthopaedic consultantancy firm called Ortho Consulting Group. All of this gives me a rather unique insight into the clinical, commercial and academic worlds.
Patient Engagement
I am a firm believer that if you know as much as possible about your hand problem, what the surgery involves, how it’s going during the operation and finally how to rehabilitate yourself then you will get a better result. Clearly my expert therapists and I will be there every step of the way! I aim to educate and engage all my patients and even give a lecture titled “How Tweeting during your surgery can improve your outcome”! If you want to film or take photos in your op, just ask!

My time as a consultant at a Major Trauma Centre exposed me to the most complex of cases, and I’m committed to offering the latest evidence-based treatments. Want to learn more? Ali brings a wealth of experience to every procedure. His journey has taken him to prestigious institutions like the Pulvertaft Hand Centre in Derby and he has been a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon since 2016. He has worked at the Major Trauma Centre in Southampton from 2016 – 2023 seeing many tertiary referrals from Wessex and beyond.
He has been involved with both the national Hand Society – the British Society for Surgery of the Hand – on the Education Committee and the European Society – the European Federation of National Associations of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (EFORT) – on their Exam Committee.
Ali currently serves as the Chief Medical Officer for Ortho Consulting Group, assisting orthopaedic companies worldwide and is Chief Medical Officer for Aurora Medical also.

Ali’s expertise in WALANT surgery has garnered international recognition, including winning The British Society for Surgery of the Hand (BSSH) prize for an instructional video in 2014. He has contributed to the book “Wide Awake Hand Surgery” by Prof. Don Lalonde and has transformed the website that he built, Walant.Surgery, into a global charitable educational resource.
Ali is not just a surgeon; he’s a researcher and educator. He has published over 15 peer-reviewed articles, contributed to hand surgery textbooks, and been invited to speak at numerous international conferences.
